Child & Youth Counselling

Child & Youth Counselling support for children, tweens and teens to help make sense of what’s going on in their minds and bodies. Gently assisting them to work through any feelings, emotions or experiences that may be adversely impacting their life.

Each session is based on the needs of the child and will incorporate a range of counselling processes that are developmentally appropriate for the age and capacity of the child. They will be met wherever they are at and supported to express their feelings, emotions or experiences in whatever way they feel comfortable to do so. If there are any skills or strategies that I feel may be of benefit, I will share these to enhance their capacity to regulate emotions and engage as fully as they can in their life.

Sessions can be in person or online, depending on your location and capacity to engage. I have worked with some teens who feel more comfortable engaging via the computer until a rapport has been established and feel comfortable enough to meet in person. In this case, I ask that the child/teen has some privacy during the session and access to a fully charged computer or tablet with earphones for noise reduction reasons.

Counselling sessions can support your child or young person with:

  • understanding the brain and nervous system
  • their thoughts, feelings and actions
  • general mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression
  • disordered eating
  • dealing with grief or loss eg. parental separation, death
  • managing strong emotions
  • emotional regulation
  • attachment and relationships
  • addictive tendencies
  • behaviour support
  • parent support
  • being differently wired eg. ADHD, Autism, sensory processing
  • highly sensitive young people
  • acute or complex trauma
  • or something unique to your situation…

Youth Mentoring

Youth Mentoring varies a little from counselling where the focus is not on therapeutic intervention and more on being a support and guide for establishing an authentic connection to self, helping the young person through blocks or challenges they may be facing to feel more empowered to step out into our ever-evolving world!

Each session in the series is uniquely designed for the young person and may cover topics such as:

  • self-esteem
  • self-compassion
  • confidence
  • friendships
  • relationships
  • goal setting
  • resilience
  • positive body image
  • strengths
  • values
  • job skills
  • boundaries
  • and more!

What to expect? The first session in the six session series is a ‘get to know each other’ session that involves looking at the intention for the mentorship and what the young person would like to achieve or how they would like to feel by the end of our time together. The following four sessions are a natural unfolding of activities, discussions or goals determined by the focus of each individual person. At the final session, we can finalise and celebrate what has been achieved or continue to work together for as long as they need support.
